What CIMA and the CGMA qualification are
CIMA, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, is the professional body through which candidates pursue CIMA's CGMA Professional Qualification. The qualification develops management accounting, finance, strategy, business and leadership capabilities for careers in organisations around the world.
Candidates can progress through the qualification using a tuition provider, through self-study, or through the digital CGMA Finance Leadership Program (FLP). The appropriate route and starting point depend on the candidate's existing qualifications, exemptions and circumstances.
The qualification develops five connected competencies that its case studies assess in realistic business scenarios:

Finance Leadership Program and traditional pathway
On the FLP, learning and topic assessments are completed through the digital platform, with professional-level case study examinations separately scheduled. On the traditional pathway, candidates take objective tests for the E, P and F subjects before each case study. Both routes use the same professional qualification framework.
The case studies: where competence is proven
The CIMA Management Case Study and CIMA Strategic Case Study are computer-based business simulations that test whether candidates can apply technical knowledge in a realistic role.
Candidates work from a pre-seen document describing a fictional company and its industry, then respond to unseen scenarios through structured business communication. The Management Case Study integrates E2, P2 and F2. The Strategic Case Study integrates E3, P3 and F3 and places the candidate in a senior finance role.
CIMA's professional-level case studies run in four windows each year: February, May, August and November. The current November 2026 and February 2027 MSL cohorts use the same paired pre-seen cycle. Examination delivery and booking remain subject to CIMA's current requirements.

Completing the examination requirements is one part of the route to CIMA membership and the CGMA designation. Candidates must also satisfy CIMA's Practical Experience Requirements, including the required period of relevant verified professional experience.
Once CIMA confirms that the examination and experience requirements have been met, eligible candidates can be admitted to membership and use the designations ACMA, CGMA in accordance with CIMA's membership rules.
