The pre-seen is the starting point for every CIMA Strategic Case Study examination.
MSL Business School analyses each new SCS pre-seen to help candidates understand the organisation, strategic environment, financial position, financing, risks, governance and the most relevant connections to E3, P3 and F3.

The case context
What is a CIMA SCS pre-seen?
A CIMA Strategic Case Study pre-seen introduces the fictional organisation and business environment that will provide the context for the examination.
Candidates receive the material before the examination so they can become familiar with the organisation before new information is introduced on exam day.
The pre-seen may include information about:
- the organisation;
- industry;
- business model;
- products or services;
- competitors;
- strategic position;
- stakeholders;
- governance;
- financing;
- financial statements;
- risk;
- sustainability;
- relevant external developments.
The examination then presents additional unseen information.
Candidates are expected to combine their knowledge of the organisation with the new information and their E3, P3 and F3 knowledge when advising management.
Strategic understanding
Why the SCS pre-seen matters
The purpose of studying the pre-seen is not to memorise every sentence.
At Strategic Level, candidates should understand the organisation well enough to discuss senior-level decisions in context.
A candidate who already understands:
- the organisation’s strategy;
- how it creates value;
- its competitive environment;
- stakeholder interests;
- financing;
- financial position;
- principal risks;
- governance;
- sustainability;
can spend more of the examination evaluating the new problem and less time trying to understand the business from scratch.
Good pre-seen preparation therefore creates the context required for strong strategic judgement.
Two-sitting cycles
How the SCS pre-seen cycle works
First annual cycle
One Strategic Case Study pre-seen is normally shared across the May and August examination windows.
Second annual cycle
A new Strategic Case Study pre-seen normally covers the November examination window and the following February window.

and
February 2027
When the next SCS case is released for the May and August 2027 cycle, the November 2026 / February 2027 case will remain permanently available in the MSL archive.

Know what CIMA actually told you
Separate official case facts from assumptions.
Understand the strategic meaning
Ask:
- why does this fact matter?
- what does it tell us about strategy?
- what does it tell us about risk?
- what does it tell us about financing or value?
Connect E3, P3 and F3
Identify technical knowledge that could help senior management deal with the issue.
Practise change
The examination will introduce new information.
Move from:

to:
“How should the organisation respond if circumstances change?”
